Core Research Databases

Academic Search Premier

  • Our largest scholarly, multi-disciplinary, full text database (from 1990 to present).
  • Abstracts and indexes over 7,900 journals (over 6,175 of those are peer-reviewed).
  • Provides the full text of over 4,500 journals (over 3,600 of those are peer-reviewed).
  • Covers broad and narrow topics. Includes full text coverage of a some magazines and journals not indexed elsewhere.

CQ Researcher

  • Each 12,000 page report covers issues such as health, social trends, criminal justice, international affairs, education, the environment, technology, and the economy.
  • Reports include a topic overview, background, chronology, tables and maps, pro/con statements from representatives of opposing positions, and bibliographies of key sources.
  • Coverage: 1991 to present (PDFs available since 2001).

Facts on File

  • Provides comprehensive information on current and controversial issues.
  • Coverage includes U.S. history, world history, language and literature, science and technology, careers, and social issues.

SIRS Researcher

  • Comprehensive reports cover social issues, health, science, business, arts, and humanities.
  • Includes a dictionary and thesaurus.

Types of Articles

Publications are written for different purposes and different audiences. Generally, there are three types of publications: scholarly, popular, and trade publications.


Scholarly Journals Popular Journals Trade Publications
Purpose Informs and reports on original research done by scholars and experts in the field. Entertains and informs a general audience without providing in-depth analysis. Reports on industry trends and new products or techniques useful to people in a trade or business.
Authors Articles are written by subject specialists and experts in the field. Articles are written by journalists, freelance writers, or an editorial staff. Articles are written by specialists in a certain field or industry.
Audience Intended for a limited audience - researchers, scholars, and experts. Intended for a broad segment of the population, appealing to non-specialists. Intended for practititioners in a particular profession, business, or industry.
